Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness & Car Accident Back Pain

Car Accident Back PainHave you ever been to a gym and had a great workout only to find out two days later that you can barely move your arms.  This is called DOMS or delayed onset muscle soreness.  After a couple of days this back pain and achiness usually goes away.
The above mentioned soreness and pain are no big deal, but have you ever been in a car accident?  A lot of my patients that I have treated due to auto accident related injuries have one thing in common:  most of them say, “it didn’t hurt immediately after the accident, but a few days later I was in excruciating pain”!

This phenomenon is very similar to DOMS, except the pain will not go away in a few days.  Car accidents are very traumatic.  With this being said, victims from an auto accident typically flood their bloodstream with endorphins and adrenaline.  They are so overworked and stressed due to the accident that their bodies do not perceive pain.  As their body returns to a homeostatic state, the muscles, joints, and ligaments that were injured gradually build up more and more inflammation.  This inflammation reaches its peak a few days after the accident, usually leaving the patient in excruciating pain.
Unfortunately if this pain is left alone, it will become a chronic injury with excessive amounts of fibrotic adhesions and scar tissue.  This newly formed, yet less elastic tissue, results in hypomobile joints, increased inflammation, and nervous system irritation.  All of that combined results in pain that won’t go away.
Decreasing the inflammation is top priority at this point, as well as restoring normal function and biomechanics to the musculoskeletal system.  It has been my experience that the sooner an auto accident victim gets evaluated by a chiropractor, the faster he or she will heal.  If the evaluation and exam waits too long, the victim could cause changes that could have lasting effects.  Unfortunately these lasting changes are typically lack of mobility and chronic pain.
If you have been in an auto accident recently I highly recommend you seek the expertise of a chiropractic physician to properly evaluate your injuries.
